Our Excellent Ingredients

Our Excellent Ingredients is a mural and series of augmented reality (AR) pop-ups in the Lake City neighborhood of Seattle, WA.

Art Interruptions connect neighborhoods through art.

Our Excellent Ingredients was designed to encourage viewers to walk though the neighborhood to discover all five AR pieces. It was created as part of the Art Interruptions program and commissioned by the City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture as well as the Seattle Department of Transportation.

I create projects that celebrate how knowledge is documented, transferred, and preserved, especially when people are displaced.

Our Excellent Ingredients celebrates the food ingredients shared across the many cultures of the Lake City neighborhood. I learned from Lake City community members that one of the things they value about their neighborhood is that people have settled here from many different places bringing their food culture with them.

The cultural dimensions of food that are often passed person to person or between generations are—

  • Technical knowledge / know-how

  • Knowledge of the excellence of ingredients

  • The culture of tastes and what constitutes good food.

The neighbors of Lake City, share culinary ingredients across cultures: corn, rice, squash, tomatoes, and garlic. Each ingredient is celebrated with its own joyous design that features the food and the plant. Designs are viewable at the mural on 127th NE and 30th NE as well as in AR moments that can be walked to from the main mural.
